We view service learning as an opportunity to encourage students to become active and contributing members of their community. Vermont Day School students participate in service projects throughout the year. Past and current service learning activities have included:
- Food Drive: Conducted annually as a leadership opportunity for our 5th grade students. Non-perishable food items are collected and delivered to the Food Shelf in Shelburne.
- Shoe Swap: After learning about the United Nations Sustainability Goals, Middle school students organized a show swap as an action project, so that families could exchange gently used shoes, thereby keeping them out of the landfill.
- Ronald McDonald House Meal Preparation: Once per month, Vermont Day School families take turns planning and preparing meals for guests staying at the House will their family members receive medical treatment at the hospital.
- Book Buddies: Students visit a nearby preschool to read and do literacy activities with younger students.
- Green Up Day: Parents, students and teachers are invited to help green up Vermont Day School the first Friday in May. Past projects have included spreading wood chips on our playground, raking beds, planting flowers and building a shed.
- MLK Day of Service: At VDS, this is a “day on”, rather than a day off. Every year, students participate in a school wide project to help a local organization. Past partners have included COTS, Age Well and the Shelburne Food Shelf.
