Art
In the Middle School art program, students continue to learn and apply more sophisticated techniques and processes of 2D and 3D design. They utilize a variety of artistic mediums including drawing, ceramics, paper mache, printmaking, painting, and sculpture. Emphasis is placed on the creative process, as students experiment with media and materials to use art as a form of self-expression, and to convey emotions and ideas.
Music & Theatre
Our music program emphasizes skill development and confidence building in the areas of vocals, instruments and performing arts. Students expand their knowledge and understanding of more advanced musical notation, composition, theory, melody and harmony. They have an opportunity to choose an instrument to play independently and as part of a group ensemble. During winter CLIC week, students participate in an all school play production, during which they rehearse lines and music, and design sets and costumes for the final performance at the Shelburne Town Hall.
Physical Education
During PE, Middle School students develop more complex movement skills in the context of games, challenges and sports. There is a continued emphasis on confidence-building, friendly competition, teamwork, sportsmanship, and individual goal setting. Students learn and practice fundamental skills and strategies related to specific sports, such as ultimate frisbee, soccer, kickball, cross-county and yoga. Students may also establish and work towards personal fitness goals. Once a week in January and February, students travel to the Field House in Shelburne for indoor PE.
Health & Wellness
Health and wellness are integral components of our curriculum. Middle School students explore issues relevant to adolescence and their developmental stage. Possible topics include: stress management, nutrition, positive body image, substance use prevention, responsible decision-making, friendships, safe social medial behavior, bullying and sex education.
