Students and teachers take advantage of learning both inside and outside the classroom whenever possible. Our rural campus allows us to incorporate the natural world into educational activities to enhance learning and connections with our environment.
Hosmer Point
Our 2nd-8th grade students participate in an overnight trip to Hosmer Point in idyllic Craftsbury Commons, Vermont. This excursion is an opportunity for students to hone their outdoor leadership skills and experience a camp like experience with their peers. While at Hosmer Point, they have the opportunity to experience a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, archery, swimming, canoeing and campfire building. This trip is a highlight of the year for all.
Shelburne Farms
Each classroom at Vermont Day School participates in a month long intensive environmental and outdoor education experience at Shelburne Farms. In collaboration with a Farm educator, our faculty develops curriculum that aligns with their STEM and Global Studies work. During their time at the farm, students are immersed in hands on learning and discovery in and around the outdoor classroom.
Costa Rica
Every 3rd year, our middle school students will participate in a “Service and Sustainability” trip to Costa Rica. Students will learn first hand about the ecology, natural history and culture of this beautiful country. A few highlights include: assist biologists with vital wildlife conservation projects in the Cloud Forests of Monteverde, zipline through the rainforest on a Cloud Forest canopy tour, help Cloud Forest researchers tag and release tropical songbirds, visit a local school, tour an organic coffee farm and learn about sustainable growing practices, and look for rarely-seen nocturnal animals during a guided rainforest night hike.
