As part of their Transportation unit, K/1 students have been learning about force, motion and energy in STEM. Here, they are using race cars and a track to investigate how friction impacts motion.
April 4th-8th- Spring CLIC week
During our Spring CLIC (Create, Learn, Innovate, Celebrate) week, students will work on a week-long project with Burton Snowboards. Burton will present students with snowboard prototypes and challenge them to improve the prototype from a technical, aesthetic or marketing perspective. This is a real-world opportunity for students to put the design process in action and apply their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills. We can’t wait to see their proposals!
April 12th- Parent Committee Meeting

STEM Class Designs Simple Machine Prototypes
As their culminating project for a hands-on unit about simple machines, the 2/3/4 students are faced with the challenge of creating a compound machine that uses two or more simple machines to do its job. As part of the Design Thinking process, they created prototypes to test their designs. After reflecting on what works and what could be improved, they will begin to build their final product. Students Learn to Code and Program Ozobots
During an after school enrichment class, students learned to code Ozobot robots using a visually-based coding programming called Ozoblocky. They learned to write code on our chromebooks and program the robots to perform a variety of tasks, including navigating an obstacle course. Preparing for Student-Led Conferences
March 23rd- Field Trip to Flemming Museum @ UVM
Students will visit the Flemming Museum of Art at UVM on March 23rd to see the Ancient Egypt exhibit, which includes a 6th century mummy!
March 24th- Professional Development/No School for Students
Vermont Day School teachers have a Professional Development Day on March 24th. There is no school for students on March 24th or 25th, 2016.
March 25th- Parent & Teacher Conferences/No School for Students
We look forward to meeting with you during conferences. K/1 conferences are for parents and teachers. The 2/3/4 class will participate in student-led conferences; this is an opportunity for our older students to reflect on their learning and growth, and share their amazing digital portfolios with parents. There is no school for students on March 25th.
April 1st- Ancient Egypt Museum Gallery Opening
Families are welcome to join us from 2:30-3:15 pm on Friday, April 1st for the 2/3/4s Ancient Egypt Museum Gallery Opening. The museum will feature student made artifacts and explanations that highlight what they have learned during their inquiry into this fascinating culture. Come learning about pharoahs and viziers, the mummification process, hieroglyphics, pyramids and tombs, gods, the afterlife & more!
March 16th- Shelburne Town Tour
As part of their inquiry into towns & cities, the K/1 class will be taking a tour of Shelburne on March 16th. Their field trip will include visits to the post office, Shelburne supermarket and Folino’s. Students are very curious as to how mail is sorted and delivered, and what happens behind the scenes at a local supermarket. Of course, the day would not be complete without visiting our neighbor and enjoying our favorite pizza at Folino’s!
